Tech might seem like a handful to a beginner and feel a little intimidating. But it isn’t rocket science. Anyone could be involved.

What is Tech?
In simple terms it is short term for “technology” it is used to describe the methods, systems and tools that are used to solve problems and achieve goals, often in production and trade of goods and services. It can also be defined as digital technology and the industries associated with it, for example, hardware and software. From smartphones to airplanes, and from robotics to medical procedure
Here’s a breakdown of how you can start your own tech journey. No matter the skillset or level of expertise

1. Choose the right tech skill: this is the first step in getting in to tech. but with the growth of the internet, today we have access to a plethora of information online which makes it easy to get distracted by recommendations you see. The key thing in choosing the right tech skill is based solely on 3 things:
• Knowing what you want
• Knowing what your interests are
• And just starting
These may seem like easy tasks but there are many tech enthusiasts’ daily making awful decisions because they haven’t gone through this process. Knowing what you want is crucial because it forms the foundation of why you want to get into tech in the first place, it in turns forms important questions that will determine the timeline of how long and how much investment you may be willing to make towards your tech journey. Is it a hobby? Or are you doing this as career? The good thing is you get decide.
Knowing what your interests are is also very pivotal in this journey because it helps you save time, yes you heard that right. For example, people more often than not assume that anybody with a tech skill must learn how code with python, css or any of the computer programming languages. Well there might be some truth to it, it doesn’t typically describe the trajectory of every tech career. There are multiple fields that don’t need you to code. Now imagine if you were a newbie getting into tech with zero interest in coding, wouldn’t it feel frustrating? (Vice versa). Knowing your interests would go a long way in making the right decision of choosing the right skill that perfectly suits you.

If you’ve been able to decide on what you want and knowing what your interests are, then you are step away from starting your tech journey, you just have one more pit stop. And that is taking action by just starting. No matter how small, over a period of time, progress will be made and you would realize that becoming an expert is just an accumulation of the efforts you are putting in.

2. Niche down: the popular phrase “jack of all trades and master of none” fits perfectly into the world of technology. The fact that you can do so many things at once doesn’t make you an expert in a given field. Rather than picking a course on udemy or any other digital platforms every other week, you can opt for a better option of doing something for a long period of time. This way you understand your weaknesses better which in turn can help you figure out where your strengths lie. Choosing a niche is a very specific skill that requires you to be consistent in a particular field. For instance Data Analysis is a broad career in tech and choosing to be a financial analyst may help you narrow down your line of work. Now, we are not saying you have to pick data analysis as a career choice but in whatever you choose you have to ensure you stick to it because it just might be thing that kick starts your tech journey.
3. Be consistent: showing up every day might be hard but it is what you need to achieve success in this ever evolving industry. It can be as simple as setting new goals, or tweaking something you did because an idea just popped in. consistency also helps you in showing up in the days you don’t feel like doing anything. It is the silent motivator that you need and the silent cheer you may receive after a completing a task.
4. Build a portfolio: building a portfolio is one of the most crucial things in starting your tech journey. It involves building a collection of both past and present works. It is the step that precedes applying for a job. Whether it is a sample of what you’ve done or a product of a freelance gig you just completed.
5. Build a CV/Resume: this is a document that perfectly describes your skill, impact and efficiency in one place. It is your ticket to securing your place in the job market where thousands of people alike are applying for jobs on a daily basis. What stands you out is the content of your resume. Ensure it is tailored properly and not just filled with things that aren’t important.
6. Determine your own success: this is important in the sense that you set the pace in how you would like to be rewarded. As a career, you have the option of earning an income that affords you the lifestyle you may want to live. In comparison to a hobby you get to try different things that do not necessarily have a financial gain attached to it. The point is none is better than the other and in whatever you choose, make sure you are making decisions that revolve around your goals and ambition.
